Last time, the Fayetteville-Manlius community stormed the field when its football team had more points than Christian Brothers Academy after four quarters.
While things were buzzing before that game, the anticipation for Friday’s homecoming game against Central Square has F-M’s entire high school just biting their nails, asking when they should arrive for the game, and spending the week showing spirit in all kinds of ways.
Besides being homecoming, this game means something in terms of the playoff picture and has the potential to decide who the league champion is, as it is tight at the top of the division that we are dealing with.
Although F-M is coming off of a very disappointing loss to Indian River, Central Square can’t say that they have much more momentum entering the game, as it lost a heartbreaker to CBA the last time they hit the field for a game.
F-M (3-2, 3-1) could surpass Central Square (4-1, 4-1) in the standings with a victory. If the Hornets do win the contest, they would have one less league loss than Central Square and would go into the regular season finale at Rome Free Academy in good shape.
When it comes down to it, if the Hornets beat Central Square this week and RFA next, they will win the league title.
And that is going to be the factor that motivates both teams as the game ages. This week, the players and coaches on both sides have expressed what this game means, whether it’s through an interview or just practicing as hard as possible.
F-M’s players have been just practicing harder than ever before, just as they were leading up to the CBA game. The team, which has been hit with injuries from time to time, is complete and injuries won’t keep guys off the field this week.
In practice, the Hornets have made some strides. Head coach Paul Muench, who has demanded that every player leaves everything on the practice field, constantly has been reminding his team that they have to go at full speed at all times.
Muench has been emphasizing the idea that his team is going to have to be physical in this game if they want to win in front of the community that is just learning that this F-M football team is a special one.
