Assistive technology is something that companies like to overprice because people and companies know that it’s something that people can’t avoid buying.

When somebody labels something as being “assistive”, the price makes a huge leap. Every time that somebody encounters something like that, it gets very frustrating, because, everybody knows that everybody involved is going to make a fortune from it.

It is very easy to overprice something that is made for people with disabilities, because, no matter how expensive it is, people are going to buy it, because, they need it. It is like taking advantage of somebody’s disability, which is unacceptable.

Even though many people have no problem purchasing something like that, there are people who don’t have a lot of money and can’t afford something that is that expensive.

It is like bullying.

Companies are shooting the prices sky-high because people will buy it.  If somebody isn’t able to talk, they are going to need a device to help them communicate with others, so, many of the communication devices have prices that are outrageously high. Communication devices are just one of the many types of assistive technologies that are overpriced.

When vendors go out and advertise one of their pieces of equipment, even though they may seem like they care about what people’s needs are, they are just focused on coming up with ways to sell the items.

Whenever you are trying something new, you have to find time to really get to know it and decide whether or not it is going work for you, especially in a situation like this. It is hard to judge whether or not something will be a long term solution based on results from just one day.

If a representative of a product comes to evaluate somebody with a disability for a day, they won’t be able to fully understand the problems that the person is having.  In order to catch on to the person’s daily struggles, the representative would have to follow them around for at least a week.

Vendors expect people to act before they think and just purchase a device that is in the five-digit price range before considering everything about it.
